Wright, Bock, and the Studio Piers

Wright built his home and studio at 951 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois. The studio dates to 1898.

For the crouching figure he turned to the sculptor Richard Bock. Bock was born in Germany in 1865 and worked closely with Wright from 1903 to 1913.

The Richard Bock Boulder sculpture was made for exactly that doorway. It is still visible from the street in Oak Park.

A Soul Breaking Its Bonds

The Boulder is described as a symbol of the oppressed and shackled soul. It struggles to break its bonds and find self expression.

The Boulder Crouching Man statue shows that struggle in a solid mass. The crouched form seems carved from the ground itself. As a Frank Lloyd Wright Boulder statue, it joins art to architecture. Find more designs in our Frank Lloyd Wright Collection.

Display and Care

At 50 to 60 lbs, the Boulder Crouching Man statue needs a firm base. Place the Boulder Crouching Man statue where visitors can walk around it. An Oak Park studio garden sculpture like this suits a garden path, a patio, or an entry. Brush it clean with a soft brush. The Richard Bock Boulder sculpture rewards a slow walk around it.

Frank Lloyd Wright in Brief

Frank Lloyd Wright lived from 1867 to 1959. He trained under Louis Sullivan in Chicago and developed the Prairie style at his Oak Park studio. His buildings treated every detail, down to the furniture, as part of one design. The Richard Bock Boulder sculpture shows that idea outdoors. A Frank Lloyd Wright Boulder statue and an Oak Park studio garden sculpture share that spirit.
