A Street Cafe Glows Beneath the Stars in Cafe Terrace at Night Stained Glass
Vincent van Gogh painted a street cafe in Arles under the stars in 1888. This Cafe Terrace at Night stained glass panel glows with the same lamplight. A dark blue sky, piercing stars, and a brown-orange building frame the scene.
The cafe stood on the Place du Forum in Arles. Van Gogh painted it at night, lit by a large gas lantern. It is one of the first paintings in which he used a starry sky.
The original hangs in the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Netherlands. This Van Gogh Arles painting turns an ordinary street into a dream.
Color Becomes the Subject
Van Gogh gave the street many colors, so it gains texture and movement. The sky is dark and vibrant, and the stars pierce it. With a light source near the glass, his strong color is a natural companion.
Vincent van Gogh stained glass lets lamplight and starlight glow together. Cafe Terrace at Night stained glass shows why. A Cafe Terrace at Night stained glass panel also suits a lit reading corner. Explore more in our stained glass collection.

Vincent van Gogh in Brief
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter who moved to Arles in 1888, drawn by its bright sunlight. There he painted some of his most famous scenes, including cafe terraces and fields. Color, rather than detail, became the subject of his art. This vision shaped Post-Impressionism and modern painting. Every Van Gogh Arles painting trusts color above all, and Post-Impressionist stained glass shows why.
