Two Grasses, Two Oils
Two different grasses yield citronella oil. Java citronella is known only from cultivation, probably from southern India or Sri Lanka. Ceylon citronella production is limited to Sri Lanka. The two oils are neither substitutes nor alternatives to each other.
The Java Harvest
Large-scale production in Java began around 1900 with improved selections and distillation equipment. Adulterated oil later damaged its reputation. Strict production controls between the World Wars restored it. Java oil has a fresh, sweet and rosy aroma.
Using and Storing Your Oil
Add a few drops of this citronella fragrance oil to your own base. A grassy fragrance oil like this suits summer cream. If you add it to homemade candles for a summer candle scent, follow your wax maker's guidance. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Browse more scents in the Fragrance Oils collection or the full Museumize fragrance collection. Keep the cap tight and store the bottle upright, away from heat and direct sun.
Lemongrass and citronella share a grassy, lemony character. That is why a lemongrass scent feels at home in summer blends. A summer candle scent can rely on it, and a grassy fragrance oil gives soap an outdoor lift.
