Seen Through a Keyhole
Degas drew women washing and drying themselves. He wanted to show them unposed, as if unobserved. A Degas woman in a tub is a classic example.
The Met owns a pastel of the subject, Woman Bathing in a Shallow Tub, from 1885. Degas showed it in a suite of nudes at the 1886 Impressionist exhibition.
Critics faulted the awkward poses. Degas later traded it to Mary Cassatt.
A Paperweight with Personality
The size makes the Degas bather paperweight a small treasure. It would look lovely on a dresser or a makeup table.
Pair it with our Degas Little Dancer Statue and the wider Parastone Museum Replicas.
Display and Care
At 1.5 lbs, the Degas Bather statue sits steadily on its square base. Dust the Degas bronze finish figurine with a soft dry brush. Keep it away from damp air.
Edgar Degas in Brief
Edgar Degas lived from 1834 to 1917. He is linked to French Impressionism but is closer to Realism. His ballerinas alone number more than 1,500 works.
