The Doryphoros

The Doryphoros, or spear bearer, was made by the Greek sculptor Polykleitos around 440 BC. The bronze original is lost. It survives in Roman marble copies. The best known copy, found in Pompeii, is in Naples. The Greek spear bearer stood with a spear resting on his left shoulder. The pose shows contrapposto and an early free hanging arm.

The Ideal Male Form

Polykleitos built the figure to illustrate his treatise, the Canon, which set out ideal body measurements. The head is about one seventh of the body's height. The stance shows contrapposto. Athletes, soldiers, and gods were celebrated in such works. This hand cast plaster torso keeps the muscle and balance of the athlete. A classical athlete torso like this one shows the ideal at its core. The Greek spear bearer illustrated those ideal proportions.
