A Woman Rising From a Column: The Flower in the Crannied Wall Statue

A naturalistic female nude rises from a geometric column of stone. This Flower in the Crannied Wall statue was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Bock. It is an authorized reproduction by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Taliesin West.

It was made for the entrance alcove of the 1902 Susan Lawrence Dana House in Springfield, Illinois. It can still be seen there. Wright knew he wanted a sculpture there but not exactly what. The final terra cotta design combined ideas from both architect and sculptor.

It takes its name from the Alfred, Lord Tennyson poem, which is also shown on the back. The sculpture symbolically represents humanity's attempt to understand nature and the universe. Wright later commissioned a second plaster version for Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin. A Flower in the Crannied Wall statue brings that idea into the home.

Naturalism Meets Geometry

The figure is soft and lifelike, while the column is hard and abstract. That tension is the heart of the piece. The Dana House sculpture shows how Prairie style architecture welcomed fine art. The Dana House sculpture asks viewers to look closely at small things.

Wright and Bock worked as partners, so the form belongs to the building. Explore more in our Frank Lloyd Wright collection. The Frank Lloyd Wright Richard Bock statue makes a thoughtful gift for a lover of poetry. Tennyson poem sculpture of this kind is rare.

Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Bock

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) trained under Louis Sullivan and developed the Prairie style in Oak Park. Richard Bock was a Chicago sculptor who collaborated with Wright on many early commissions. Their partnership brought sculpture, glass, and furniture into a single design. The Dana House is the finest surviving example of their work.
