A Self-Portrait from 1940

The design shows a detail of Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, painted by Frida Kahlo in 1940. The painting belongs to the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Photographer Nickolas Muray bought it from her during a hard financial time. It joined the Ransom Center collection in 1966.

Thorns, Leaves, and Companions

The title names a thorn necklace with a hummingbird hanging from it. Dark animals sit behind her shoulders, and tropical leaves fill the background.

Her imagery speaks of pain, death, and rebirth. Wear these round portrait earrings as a salute to a Mexican artist who painted her own story.

Frida as Fashion Icon

Kahlo was known for braided hair, flowers, and bold jewelry. She often wore traditional Mexican dress in her portraits.

Frida Kahlo jewelry honors that look. These Frida Kahlo earrings carry her gaze wherever you go.

Wearing and Caring for Your Earrings

At 1 oz, these Frida Kahlo earrings feel light. Wear these round portrait earrings and Mexican artist earrings with green, black, or red. This Frida Kahlo jewelry needs only a wipe with a soft dry cloth. Browse more in our Museum Jewelry collection.

Kahlo (1907-1954) taught herself to paint after a bus accident at 18. Andre Breton called her work Surrealist, but she said she painted her own reality. Mexican artist earrings like these celebrate her legacy.
