Where the Guardian Angel Tradition Began

The idea of a guardian angel watching over children reaches back through scripture and early Christian teaching. In Matthew 18:10, Jesus speaks of children and their angels in heaven. He says these angels always look upon the face of God the Father.

Saint Basil the Great and Saint Jerome, early Church writers, built on this idea in the 4th century. They taught that an unseen protector stands beside every believer from birth.

Prayers and Family Traditions

The bedtime prayer that begins Angel of God, my guardian dear traces back to an 11th century Latin verse. It was written by a Benedictine monk named Reginald in Canterbury, England.

Centuries later, during the Counter Reformation, the Catholic Church encouraged simple family prayers like this one. This guardian angel statue carries that same tradition of prayer and comfort at a child's bedside.
