The Hell Creek Formation is one of the most famous fossil-hunting locations in the world - the geological layer that preserves the final years of the dinosaurs across portions of North and South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. But Hell Creek is not only about dinosaur bones. This authentic Hell Creek Dawn Redwood fossil cone is a small Metasequoia fossil cone from a Dawn Redwood tree that once towered over a landscape full of Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Pachycephalosaurus, and more. These trees were witnesses to the end of the dinosaurs.
A Tree That Watched the Dinosaurs - Fossilized
This is not a cast. This is a genuine fossilized plant specimen - a small Metasequoia cone from the Hell Creek Formation. The fossils range in size from approximately 0.75 in to 1 in wide. All show some signs of weathering from the fossilization process, which is expected and authentic.
The Authentic Hell Creek Metasequoia Fossil for Plant Fossil Collectors
Dawn Redwoods (Metasequoia) were once thought to be entirely extinct - known only from fossils - until a living population was discovered in China in 1944. This makes them a true living fossil. The Hell Creek specimens predate that discovery by 66 million years and grew in the same ecosystem that produced T. rex and Triceratops. Each specimen includes a Mini Museum certificate of authenticity and informational display card. Explore more in our Prehistoric Collection and our Natural History Collection.
