This Helm of Awe necklace reproduces the Aegishjalmur, an Icelandic stave built from eight identical trident arms. The arms radiate from a center point like spokes. Each one points outward like a spear. The design was meant to project strength rather than invite it in.
This design comes from post-medieval Icelandic grimoires, not Viking Age carvings. It is often confused with the Vegvisir, a separate wayfinding stave. The Vegvisir has eight different, unmatched arms. The two symbols serve different purposes and look distinct up close.

Origins in the Icelandic Grimoires
The Aegishjalmur first appears in books such as the Galdrabok and the Huld Manuscript. Both were compiled centuries after the Viking Age ended. These texts recorded galdrastafir, or magical staves. They sat alongside folk remedies and charms used by Icelandic farmers and healers.
A Symbol of Power and Protection
Its name translates to helm of terror. Icelandic tradition held that pressing the sign between the eyes granted invincibility. It was also said to strike fear into enemies. The eight matching spokes were read as concentrated strength radiating outward in every direction at once.
Pairing With Other Icelandic Staves
Collectors often wear the Helm of Awe alongside a rune pendant or another galdrastafir design. Icelandic magical staves were recorded together in the same grimoires. Pairing them today keeps that shared source visible in a small jewelry collection.
Styling and Wearing
At just over an inch across, the pewter pendant sits close to the collarbone on its 33 in cord. It works well alone or layered with other Norse pieces from the same pewter line.
