About the Artwork: Red Fuji

Red Fuji is the common name for South Wind, Clear Sky, part of Hokusai's series Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji, made around 1830 to 1832. The print captures a brief natural phenomenon, when clear autumn air and low morning light turn the mountain's slopes a deep red.

The composition is deceptively simple: a single mountain, a band of textured cloud, and a wide sky rendered in Prussian blue, a pigment newly available in Japan at the time.
