Hollyhock House Stained Glass: A Flower Made Abstract & Wright's Los Angeles Debut

Aline Barnsdall loved the hollyhock, and Wright made it the emblem of her Los Angeles home. He turned the tall flower into pattern. This Hollyhock House stained glass panel carries that emblem in glass.

Wright designed the house for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. It was completed in 1921 and was his first Los Angeles commission.

Wright abstracted the hollyhock into a repeating motif across the house. It appears in concrete, furnishings, and the Hollyhock House art glass. In 2019 the house joined the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A Flower Reduced to Its Essential Rhythm

Wright rarely copied nature directly. He reduced forms to their essential lines. This Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock window follows that method, turning a garden flower into ordered pattern. Frank Lloyd Wright art glass often finds its subject in nature.

Wright called his windows light screens. They softened daylight and framed the view beyond. See related designs in our Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass collection. Hollyhock House art glass deserves a bright place, as does this piece. Frank Lloyd Wright art glass like this repays a long look.
