The Schiller Effect
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar. Thin alternating layers of albite and anorthite, called lamellae, sit inside it. They act like a million tiny mirrors and give the labradorite schiller effect.
The labradorite schiller effect is not pigment. It is light interfering beneath the surface, so colors move as you tilt the stone.
From Labrador to Madagascar
The mineral is named for Labrador, Canada, where it was identified in 1770. Today Madagascar labradorite is among the most prized, and Finland is the other major gem source.
Hold one and watch for blue and green flashes, the most common colors. See more minerals in our Natural History Collection.
Display and Care
Keep the polished palm stone away from knocks and harsh cleaners. Wipe with a soft cloth.
About Palm Stones
A polished palm stone is made to be held and turned. Labradorite shows off its flash best that way. Every labradorite palm stone is shaped to fit your hand.
