A Lucky Beetle on a Chain: The Ladybug Pendant Necklace
A glossy red shell with black spots, trimmed in gold. The ladybug pendant necklace hangs on a 16 in chain and has real depth. The beetle is 7/8 in long and a half inch deep, a little sculpture rather than a flat charm.
The design follows the style of Carl Faberge, the Russian court jeweler. This Faberge ladybug necklace borrows his taste for small living things in enamel.

Why a Ladybug Means Luck
In much of Europe the beetle was tied to the Virgin Mary. That is how the ladybird got its name. A ladybug that lands on you is a sign of good fortune.
The old belief is why good luck ladybug jewelry remains a favorite gift. It asks nothing of you but a smile.
Faberge and Small Animals
Faberge's workshop made jeweled eggs and tiny animals for the Tsar. The firm made nature small, exact and precious. Red and black enamel suits a ladybug because the colors need no pretending.
A red enamel ladybug pendant stays true to the real insect. The Faberge ladybug necklace adds only gold for the border.
The Paris Prize
Faberge's firm won the Grand Prix at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. That prize carried the name of the Russian court jeweler around Europe. Good luck ladybug jewelry in this vein still follows his style.
Wearing the Ladybug Pendant Necklace
Wear the ladybug pendant necklace at the collarbone. Keep it dry and out of perfume. Wipe the enamel with a soft cloth and store it flat.
A red enamel ladybug pendant looks best on a plain collar. Good luck ladybug jewelry makes a cheerful pairing with a plain sweater. See more in our Museum Jewelry Necklaces.
About the Court Jeweler
Carl Faberge was born in 1846 and died in 1920. His firm was a Goldsmith by Special Appointment to the Imperial court from 1885. He left Russia after the 1917 revolution. The ladybug pendant necklace is a small echo of that court.
