Seals and Charters
In the Middle Ages, a seal did the work of a signature. A metal matrix pressed an image into warm wax. The wax hung from the parchment on a silk cord or a strip of parchment. Royal seals showed the king enthroned on one side and on horseback with a sword on the other. A medieval seal ring recalls that practice.
The Charter of 1215
King John agreed to the Magna Carta at Runnymede on 15 June 1215. The charter was authenticated with his Great Seal. Officials, not the king, usually pressed the seal. The charter limited royal power and later became a foundation of English law. Magna Carta costume jewelry keeps that story close.
Wearing the Seal
A medieval seal ring suits a king, a noble, or a scribe in costume. It also makes a handsome gift for a student of English law. The ring top is small, yet its design reads clearly.
Styling and Wearing the Magna Carta Ring
Adjust the band to fit most hands. The King John seal ring pairs well with a medieval or Renaissance costume. Browse related pieces in our Museum Jewelry collection.
Care Notes
Wipe the pewter with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. Store it flat to protect the finish.
