March Balloons Stained Glass: Circles Drifting Through Light

Frank Lloyd Wright is remembered for buildings, yet he also drew like an abstract painter. Here circles of many sizes drift as if lifted by wind. This March Balloons stained glass panel captures that playful pattern.

Wright made this design for a cover of Liberty Magazine around 1926 to 1927. The cover was never published, but the Liberty Magazine cover design survives. The balloons near and far are suggested only by circles repeated in different sizes.

The circle would return in Wright's work for decades. It appears in his late masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum in New York. This Frank Lloyd Wright abstract design is among his most playful.

An Abstract Design in Glass

This Frank Lloyd Wright abstract design shows how freely he could think outside architecture. Near and far, large and small, the circles create depth without a single drawn figure. Few Liberty Magazine cover design studies translate so naturally to glass.

Frank Lloyd Wright art glass often began as graphic design. See more in our Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass collection.
