From Carrara to Cycladic Echoes

As a young man, Modigliani went to the quarries of Carrara to hone his sculpting skills. His curiosity later drew him to the sculpture of Africa and Oceania.

To the best of our knowledge, he made 24 sculpted heads and only two full human figures. Both were inspired by caryatids, the female figures that serve as columns.

The larger Modigliani standing caryatid is carved in limestone and stands 1.6 m tall. It blends archaic styles, from Cycladic art to Cambodian design.

The Caryatid Tradition

Caryatids hold up the porch of the Erechtheion on the Athenian Acropolis. Modigliani borrowed that upright, load bearing pose and stripped away the drapery.

He worked in stone only until about 1915. The Modigliani full figure nude statue preserves one of the few full length results.

Learning to See in Simple Forms

The yellow ochre stone statue finish imitates the warm tone of carved limestone. It shows how little detail a body needs to read clearly.

This abstract nude desk statue suits students of drawing as well as lovers of modern art. See more in the Modigliani Female Statues Collection. Find our Parastone Museum Replicas too.

Display and Care

At 1.8 lbs, the Modigliani full figure nude statue suits a desk or shelf. Dust it with a soft dry cloth. Keep the finish away from damp air.

Amedeo Modigliani in Brief

Modigliani lived from 1884 to 1920 and gave up sculpting in 1915 because of ill health. His paintings keep the elongated forms of his stone heads.
