Daydreams Take Form in Mucha Reverie Stained Glass

Alphonse Mucha gave a daydream a face. This Mucha Reverie stained glass panel shows the personification of Reverie, seated in a beautiful dress. An ornate frame surrounds her like a jeweled setting.

Mucha, a Czech artist working in Paris, became famous for decorative posters in the 1890s. His women wear flowing hair and halo-like rings of ornament, a motif that echoes Byzantine art. This Mucha Art Nouveau panel follows that formula.

The Reverie design belongs to the early years of the advertising poster. Mucha made commercial art feel like fine art. Alphonse Mucha stained glass returns it to the light.

Bold Outline, Flat Color, Open Light

Mucha drew with firm outlines and clear fields of color, a habit learned partly from Japanese prints. Those outlines read like the lines of a stained glass window. Art Nouveau stained glass suits his style, and in 1931 he designed a window for St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.

Light lifts the quiet mood of this Mucha Reverie stained glass piece. Alphonse Mucha stained glass seems made for a window. Explore more in our stained glass collection.

Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau in Brief

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was born in Moravia. He found fame in Paris in the 1890s with theatrical posters for Sarah Bernhardt. His graceful women and flowing ornament became the face of Art Nouveau. Late in life he designed a stained glass window for St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague and painted the Slav Epic. Art Nouveau stained glass carries that flowing line into light.
