The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also known as the Nike of Samothrace, is one of the most celebrated sculptures of ancient Greece. The monumental marble original represents Nike, the Greek goddess and personification of victory, and once stood in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace in the Aegean Sea.
Nike appears as if she has just descended onto the prow of a ship. Her wings extend behind her, while an imaginary wind presses the fabric of her garment against her body, sending the drapery billowing around her. This combination of movement, drama, and virtuosic carved drapery makes the sculpture a masterpiece of Hellenistic art. Though the marble appears white today, ancient Greek sculptures were often originally colored.
Discovered on Samothrace in 1863, the original now stands at the top of the Daru staircase in the Louvre in Paris. Its right wing, missing at the time of discovery, was later reconstructed. This sculpture replica brings the extraordinary dynamism of the ancient masterpiece to a smaller scale.
