This owl is based on an ancient Greek aryballos, a small vessel used to hold precious perfumed oil. Such vessels were widely used from the 7th century BC onwards and were carried by athletes to the gymnasium, where oil played an important role in body care.

Aryballoi were usually small and rounded, but were sometimes shaped like people or animals. The owl held a special significance in the Greek world. It was closely associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom and patron goddess of Athens, and became one of her most recognizable symbols.
