Pachycephalosaurus was a Late Cretaceous dinosaur whose skull dome of solid bone - up to 10 inches thick - is one of the most extraordinary anatomical structures in the dinosaur fossil record. This authentic Pachycephalosaurus dome fossil in the medium size is a larger fragment of a real skull dome recovered from the Hell Creek Formation of South Dakota, over 66 million years old. The medium fragment offers more surface area to appreciate the dense, fine-grained texture of this remarkable bone.
More of the Cretaceous Helmet - The Medium Dome Fragment
The Pachycephalosaurus dome is among the densest bone structures of any dinosaur - a natural armor cap evolved for the forces of intraspecific combat. Healed fractures observed in some dome specimens are consistent with head-butting behavior, and the dome's morphology changed significantly during the animal's lifetime. This is not a cast. This is a genuine fossil, presented in a glass-topped riker display case with an informational card serving as the statement of authenticity.
