Pier Cluster Laylight Stained Glass: A Ceiling Pattern in Miniature at the Martin House

A laylight is a glazed panel set into a ceiling, so that light falls from above. Frank Lloyd Wright loved the device, and this Frank Lloyd Wright laylight shows why. This Pier Cluster laylight stained glass panel brings that overhead glow down to eye level.

The initials D.D.M. refer to Darwin D. Martin, the Buffalo executive for whom Wright designed a great house complex between 1903 and 1905. Wright later called the commission his opus.

Nearly 400 art glass windows were made for the complex, in fifteen distinct patterns. The Martin House laylight designs belong to this larger family of glass.

Light from Above, Order Within

Wright used laylights to draw daylight into the heart of a room. Their patterns are quiet and orderly, never fussy. Each Frank Lloyd Wright laylight turns plain light into a measured composition.

Every Martin House laylight shares this discipline. This design shows Prairie style stained glass at its most architectural. See related pieces in our Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass collection.
