In French Quarter Days, New Orleans (1989), Don Davey fills a sunny street corner with the life of the Vieux Carré. The spires of St. Louis Cathedral rise above a unicycling juggler, a flower cart, a street performer and children at play, while artists show their work beneath a sprawling live oak along the iron fence of Jackson Square. It is a good example of what made Davey a favorite with collectors: drawings that are both factual and impressionistic, full of warmth and vitality. He began his career at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, drew for McCall's, The Saturday Evening Post and Fortune, and went on to teach in San Francisco and serve as president of the Society of Illustrators. Over one million of his lithographs have found homes with collectors.
