Hats, Rosy Cheeks and the Renoir Two Sisters Pin

Blue and red enamel pick out the hats and the flushed cheeks of two girls on a terrace. The Renoir Two Sisters pin reduces Pierre Auguste Renoir's 1881 painting to a small gold plated brooch.

Look closely and you will find fine details on the hats and the basket. This Renoir painting jewelry is a licensed reproduction from the Art Institute of Chicago.

A Spring at Chatou

Renoir spent much of the spring of 1881 at Chatou, a town on the Seine west of Paris. He thought it an ideal leisure spot. He set the girls on a terrace with the river landscape behind them.

The Art Institute describes the scene as a stage set, a world of pure vision. Art Institute of Chicago jewelry rarely gets a subject so full of light.

Two Girls Who Were Not Sisters

The title says sisters, but the museum notes the girls were not related. The older one is Jeanne Darlot, then about eighteen. Her companion is unidentified.

The younger girl looks as if she just dashed into the picture. Darlot later took a few supporting roles in the theater. An Impressionist enamel brooch can hold that fleeting moment.

A Basket That Looks Like a Palette

Renoir mixed bright, pure pigments for this canvas. The museum suggests the basket in the foreground echoes an artist's palette. His dealer showed the painting at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882.

In glass enamel, the Renoir Two Sisters pin keeps those bright blues and reds. The Impressionist enamel brooch is small, but the color is the point.

Wearing and Display

Pin the Renoir Two Sisters pin to a cardigan, a hat or a camera strap. Keep the enamel dry and wipe it with a soft cloth. Art Institute of Chicago jewelry looks best pinned alone.

Renoir painting jewelry also pairs well with a framed print of the same canvas. More painted miniatures in metal are in our Museum Jewelry Pins and Brooches.

About Pierre Auguste Renoir
