Who Were the Samurai?
Samurai were elite warriors who arose in Japan in the 10th century. They served until the 19th century and were skilled with the bow and sword.
After 1185 warriors took power and set up a military government led by a shogun. The samurai were formally disestablished in 1876.
Sword and Code
The katana was the main curved sword, with a blade of about 24 in. Many carried a shorter wakizashi too.
The code called bushido was compiled in the late 17th century, after fighting had largely ended.
