During the middle ages, pilgrims would take a journey by foot known as a pilgrimage to a church with a saint's relic. The Camino de Santiago de Compostela, St James' Way, is particularly well known even today as it traverses the Pyrenees ending the journey at the east coast of Spain in Santiago de Compostela. Scallop shells were found in Galicia and given to the pilgrims to drink water and as a reward for finishing the journey. The sacred pilgrimage was one path to repentence.
