A Gold Pendant from Memphis
The Penn Museum dug at Memphis from 1915 to 1920. Among its finds is a necklace with a cast gold Sekhmet standing with her hands at her sides. It dates to the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty, about 570 to 526 BC.
The same necklace holds thirty gold cowrie-shell beads and a gold pomegranate bead decorated with granulation. Our Sekhmet earrings adapt the goddess alone.
Goddess of Medicine and Healing
Sekhmet was a lioness goddess of war and also of healing. Her priests often worked as healers. Amulets in her form offered her protection to the wearer.
The dead often wore such amulets, and the living could use them too. Wearing Sekhmet dangle earrings continues that old idea.
Wearing and Display
The gold-filled ear wires suit sensitive ears. Keep the Sekhmet earrings dry and wipe with a soft cloth. Store them in a small box. See more in our Egyptian Museum Replicas and Museum Jewelry Earrings.
Egyptian goddess earrings look best with hair pulled back. Egyptian lioness earrings of this size are easy to wear all day.
About Sekhmet
Sekhmet appears as a woman with a lioness head. Her sun disc and cobra mark her as a daughter of the sun god Ra. These Sekhmet earrings show her in that form. Egyptian lioness earrings and Sekhmet dangle earrings keep her image close.
