The Original from Memphis
The design is adapted from a solid gold pendant of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet. The Penn Museum found it in the ancient capital of Memphis.
It dates to the 26th Dynasty, in the reign of Amasis, about 570 to 526 BC.
Amulet for the Living and the Dead
Amulets like this were often worn by the dead. The living could also wear them for the goddess's protection.
Sekhmet was a goddess of medicine and healing, and also of war. Her lioness head shows both sides. A lioness goddess pin keeps that dual nature.
Wearing and Display
Pin the Sekhmet pin brooch to a jacket, a scarf or a bag strap. Or slip the chain through and wear it as a pendant.
