Bold round golden beads follow one another on a 16 in strand, with a gold plate clasp. This Sican golden bead necklace is light on the neck.

Gold on the North Coast of Peru

The Sican and later Chimu peoples worked gold on Peru's north coast. A Chimu gold disk at the Met dates from 1100 to 1470 AD.

The Met notes that precious metal ornaments for the elite grew sharply in the Sican and Chimu eras. A Pre-Columbian gold necklace belongs to that rise.

Gold and the Sun

Many Andean peoples tied gold to the sun. The metal was used in ceremonies and in burials.

A Shimu bead necklace recalls that glow in a quiet form.

Wearing and Display

Wear the Sican golden bead necklace over solid colors. It is lightweight and easy to layer. Wipe with a soft cloth.

A Peruvian gold bead necklace looks strong against dark tops. See more in our Museum Jewelry Necklaces.
