Twelve thousand years ago, Smilodon californicus stalked the grasslands of what is now California, an apex predator whose elongated upper canines -- up to 11 inches long -- made it one of the most formidable hunters in mammalian history. The original of this cast resides in the collections of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, recovered from the iconic La Brea Tar Pits where thousands of Smilodon specimens have been excavated. This Smilodon cranial cast brings that legacy into your collection in a rich, dramatic tar pit finish.
Fresh from the Tar Pit
The tar pit finish -- a deep, layered dark brown -- is the defining character of this piece. It evokes exactly what it references: a skull lifted from the asphalt seeps of Rancho La Brea, still carrying the mineral signature of 12,000 years of preservation. As a prehistoric predator museum reproduction, the 5096TAR is the more dramatic of the two Smilodon colorways, suited to collections and display environments where visual impact matters. The skull is posed in an attack position, jaws parted, and mounted on an oak display stand.
The Smilodon Cranial Cast | Detail and Craftsmanship

Sculpted from authenticated museum specimen molds, every suture line and surface contour reflects the standards of a professional natural history collection.
