Reductions of a Chicago Landmark
These are desktop reductions of sculptures that adorned the walls of Midway Gardens. At 12 in, each is about one fifth the size of the 65 in Sprite at the Met.
Midway Gardens opened in Chicago in June 1914. It was a German style beer garden with terraces, pools, and a music pavilion.
Two Figures, Two Moods
One sprite carries a baton, and one does not. Together the sprite desktop statues make a matched pair with small differences. The Maid in the Mud pair suits a bookshelf too. Frank Lloyd Wright desk sculpture rarely comes this small.
Wright co-designed the sprites with Iannelli, and their faces gaze down with a serene expression. Browse more in our Frank Lloyd Wright Collection.
Display and Care
Place the Frank Lloyd Wright desk sculpture pair on a desk, shelf, or windowsill. Each is only 12 in tall. These sprite desktop statues take little room. Dust the stone with a soft dry brush.
Alfonso Iannelli in Brief
Alfonso Iannelli lived from 1888 to 1965. Born in Italy, he moved to America in 1898 and studied sculpture under Gutzon Borglum. His design work later reached toasters, pens, and theaters. This Midway Gardens desktop set honors his first great Chicago project. Sprite desktop statues keep that story small.
