From Asylum Room to Icon

Van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 at Saint-Remy-de-Provence. He had admitted himself to an asylum there that May. The village below the sky is Saint-Remy.

MoMA bought the canvas in 1941. It was not widely famous then. Today the Starry Night tote bag shares an image known around the world.
