Orange Blossom in Al-Andalus

In al-Andalus, bitter orange trees were grown for their blossoms. The flowers were distilled into orange-flower water for hospitality, cooking and ritual. Servants sprinkled the scented water on guests from brass vessels.

From Seville to Europe

When Christian kingdoms retook Iberia, they inherited the orange groves and distillation equipment. Seville became a major center of orange cultivation. By the 14th century, orange blossom water appeared in Italian apothecary inventories. The name neroli is traditionally traced to Anne Marie Orsini, Princess of Nerola. She favored the oil in Rome around 1680.

Using and Storing Your Oil

Add a few drops of this tangerine fragrance oil to your blends for a tangerine orange blossom scent. It is a gentle citrus floral fragrance oil that sits well beside herbs and woods. Browse more scents in the Fragrance Oils collection or the full Museumize fragrance collection. Keep the cap tight and store the bottle upright, away from heat and direct sun. Orange blossom oil for soap gives a soft, springlike scent to the lather. A citrus floral fragrance oil like this one also layers well with herbs. The tangerine orange blossom scent stays gentle rather than loud.

Spain has scented its courtyards with orange blossom since the Islamic period. Seville's orange-lined streets still carry that heritage.
