What Was Theriac?

Theriac was an ancient remedy, also called treacle, used for nearly 2,000 years. According to legend, King Mithridates VI of Pontus created an antidote and took it daily. Nero's physician Andromachus improved the formula. The physician Galen later promoted it.

Theriac in Renaissance Venice

Apothecaries prepared theriac in city squares as public events, with inspections and supervision. Venice authenticated it with stamps, an early form of brand marking. The last such ceremony was in Paris in 1790. This oil borrows only the name and makes no medical claims.

Using and Storing Your Oil

Add a few drops of this theriac fragrance oil to your own base. A white musk fragrance oil note softens the woods. A woody amber fragrance oil suits cooler months. Browse more scents in the Fragrance Oils collection or the full Museumize fragrance collection. Keep the cap tight and store the bottle upright, away from heat and direct sun.

Theriac was one of the most famous brands of the ancient world. This blend lends its name to a scent of amber and wood. Many enjoy an amber sandalwood scent on a study shelf. A white musk fragrance oil and a woody amber fragrance oil complete the mood.
