From Plantagenet to Tudor

The Plantagenets ruled England from 1154 to 1399, from Henry II to Richard II. In 1399 Henry Bolingbroke deposed Richard II and took the crown as Henry IV. The crown then passed to his family, the House of Lancaster. Its symbol was the red rose. Henry VI, the third Lancastrian king, was a gentle ruler who suffered long bouts of illness. The rival House of York, with the white rose as its badge, challenged his right to rule. Richard, Duke of York, led the claim. Open fighting began in 1455 at the first Battle of St Albans. Historians later called the long struggle the Wars of the Roses. The crown changed hands several times. Edward IV, Edward V, and Richard III all ruled as Yorkist kings.

Bosworth and After

In 1485 Henry Tudor landed in Wales and marched toward Richard III. He had a distant Lancastrian claim and Welsh family roots. The two armies met at Bosworth Field in Leicestershire on August 22. Richard died in the fighting, the last English king to fall in battle. Henry took the crown as Henry VII. In 1486 he married Elizabeth of York, which joined the rival houses. He then adopted the Tudor rose, red petals around a white center, as a badge of peace. The Tudor dynasty lasted 118 years. It included Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. It ended in 1603 with the death of Elizabeth I. This small pewter rose recalls the badge that marked that new beginning.
