Vincent van Gogh and the Irises Painting

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose bold color and expressive brushwork helped shape modern art. He is especially known for thick paint application, or impasto, which gives his work a textured surface and unmistakable energy.

Van Gogh painted Irises in 1889 shortly after he voluntarily entered the psychiatric institution Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He described painting as a stabilizing practice and worked intensely in the garden and surrounding grounds. The composition shows the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints he admired, especially in the strong outlines, cropped view, and decorative rhythm of repeated forms.
