Sunflower Gold in Bright Enamel: The Van Gogh Sunflower Brooch

Bright yellow petals spin around a round center, 1.5 in across. The Van Gogh sunflower brooch is taken from a detail of a sunflower painted by Vincent Van Gogh. Enamel gives the flower the shine of fresh paint.

This yellow enamel brooch keeps the loose, rayed petals of the original. The sunflower enamel pin is round, so it sits easily on a collar.

A Picture All in Yellow

Van Gogh painted the Arles sunflowers in August 1888 at the Yellow House. He wanted to decorate the guest room for Paul Gauguin. He called one a picture all in yellow.

His yellows run from orange ochre to pale green-yellow. Thick strokes follow every petal. Sunflowers painting jewelry like this pin captures that glow in glass enamel.

Seven Sunflowers

Van Gogh made seven Arles versions between 1888 and 1889. Four came in a single week in August. Three replicas followed in January 1889. Five are on public display.

A Van Gogh sunflower brooch is a small memory of that series.

What a Sunflower Means

The sunflower stands for adoration, affection, constancy and gratitude. It turns toward the sun all day. Christian writers made it a sign of obedience to Christ. In China it is a magical flower of long life.

Few flowers carry so many meanings. A sunflower enamel pin quietly holds them all.

Wearing and Display

Pin the Van Gogh sunflower brooch to a denim jacket, a green coat or a straw hat. Keep the enamel dry. Wipe it with a soft cloth.

A yellow enamel brooch brightens a gray winter coat. More painted flowers wait in our Museum Jewelry Pins and Brooches. Sunflowers painting jewelry looks best worn alone.
