This Vegvisir Viking compass necklace carries the Icelandic wayfinder stave. The word vegvisir means "way shower" in Old Norse. It joins vegur, meaning way, with visir, meaning to point out. The stave was meant to guide a bearer through rough weather.
Each Viking compass amulet is cast in lead-free pewter. The design shows eight arms spreading from a center. It first appears in the Huld Manuscript, compiled in Iceland in 1860. Despite its fame, there is no proof it is Viking-age.

Where the Vegvisir Comes From
Geir Vigfusson recorded the Vegvisir in the Huld Manuscript in 1860. A note said its bearer would not lose their way in bad weather. The manuscript collects Icelandic magical staves. These date to the early modern period, not the Viking Age.
Stave, Not Viking Rune
The Vegvisir is often called a Viking symbol, but the evidence is thin. It belongs to Iceland's later tradition of magical staves. Some link it loosely to the grimoire called the Galdrabok. Today, it is worn as a sign of guidance and direction.
Styling and Wearing the Vegvisir Viking Compass Necklace
The Norse wayfinder jewelry necklace suits any wearer. The 33 in cord adjusts by knotting the ends. The radial design reads clearly at a glance. Worn long, the pendant rests near the heart.
Care Notes
Wipe the pewter Vegvisir pendant with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. Store it flat or hanging to protect the cord.
