The Tree and Its Name

The tree grows natively from Indochina to northeastern Australia, including the Philippines and New Guinea. Ylang-ylang is the Spanish spelling of the Tagalog name ilang-ilang. The botanical name Cananga comes from the Malay word kananga.

Distilled Flowers

Essential oil is made by steam distilling the flowers. It is graded extra, 1, 2 or 3, depending on when the distillates are collected. Madagascar grows the tree and exports its oils worldwide. The Comoros relied on ylang ylang for 29 percent of its exports in 1998.

Using and Storing Your Oil

Add a few drops of this ylang ylang fragrance oil to your own base. It is an exotic flower scent that blends well with citrus or woods. Look for another floral fragrance oil in the Fragrance Oils collection or the full Museumize fragrance collection. Keep the cap tight and store the bottle upright, away from heat and direct sun. Ylang ylang oil for soap gives a lush, floral scent to the lather. A floral fragrance oil such as this one adds richness to a plain base. An exotic flower scent pairs well with citrus.

The Spanish colonial presence in the Philippines gave the flower its Spanish-style spelling. The name ilang-ilang is Tagalog in origin.
