The Corinthian Order
Corinthian is the most ornate of the three Greek orders. Its earliest surviving capitals come from the temple of Apollo at Bassae, about 420 BC. Vitruvius credited the sculptor Callimachus with the design, after a basket on a girl's grave sprouted acanthus leaves. Romans used it on imperial monuments and on the top tier of the Colosseum. This Roman style dining table base recalls that grandeur.
The Swag Through the Centuries
A swag, or festoon, began as a real garland of flowers hung over doors and around altars. Greek and Roman carvers turned it into stone on altars, friezes, and panels. Neoclassical and Louis XVI designers later revived the motif. The swag pattern table base here evokes Roman, Renaissance, Baroque, and Victorian taste at once. Using the Corinthian Table Base
Order glass locally, since none is included. One Corinthian table base takes a 48 to 54 in top. This swag pattern table base also works as a classical column dining table in a large room. It suits a Roman style dining table in a grand space.
About the Neoclassical Revival
Neoclassical architects revived the Corinthian order across Europe and America. A Corinthian table base brings that history down to dining height.
